Competition for Granting a Research Fellowship (Rf)
Call for Applications
The EU-funded project “Advanced Multimodal Marketplace for Low Emission and Energy Transportation - ADMIRAL” invites proposals for a research fellowship grant (RFG) under the terms and conditions of the Portuguese Scientific Research Fellow Statute, approved by Law no. 40/2004, of 18 August.
Qualifications
The following candidates can apply:
Graduates in Informatics and Computer Engineering or related areas, preferably with experience in transport modelling and data science, or enrolled in a Master's Degree programme in Informatics and Computer Engineering and other related areas.
Activity Rules
All the work will be developed under an exclusive dedication regime, as established in the Scientific Research Fellow Statute, approved by Law no. 40/2004, 18 August, as it stands, and in the FCT Regulations for Studentships and Fellowships, available on FCT and LNEC websites.

Monthly Allowance
The Grant shall include a monthly allowance in the amount of € 930,98. The research fellow shall also be entitled to the applicable social security system and to insurance against personal accidents at work.

In the latter case, the applications shall be delivered in a sealed envelope, bearing the following information on the outside: “Application for the research grant in the project Advanced Multimodal Marketplace for Low Emission and Energy Transportation - ADMIRAL”.
Selection Method and Criteria
The evaluation of the applications shall be based on the Applicant’s Merits (MC), and shall comprise two stages, a first stage of curricular evaluation (AC), and a second stage — interview with the selection jury (ES) —, to which all the candidates have obtained in the first stage a score equal to or higher than 14 shall be admitted.
Applicant’s merit:
Stage 1: Curricular Evaluation (AC)
- Academic Background (PA) – scores of the academic degree required by this call – 60%
- Professional curriculum vitae (CP) – scientific and professional career – 40%
Stage 2: Applicant’s Merits (MC)
- Curricular evaluation (AC) – 60%
- Interview with the selection jury (ES) – 40%
The interview will assess the following: motivation to conduct research in the scientific area of the competition, motivation to develop the dissertation thesis in the scientific area of the competition, and capacity to express ideas and concepts orally.
Hence, the final classification is as follows:
AC = 0.6 x PA + 0.4 x CP
MC = 0.60 x AC + 0.40 x ES
Deadline
The deadline for applications is February 19th 2024.

Computer Science and Informatics Engineering applied to transportation and logistics, Data Science and Engineering and related areas, considered relevant for the project ADMIRAL
Duration
The Grant will be awarded for 12 months but may be renewed until the end of the project, which is the end of April 2026.
Workplan and Objectives
The research fellow is expected to participate in the project pilot Portugal-Spain (WP5, task 5.2) led by the Port of Sines and the Algarve Administration (APS), in cooperation with MARLO and LNEC. This pilot is an element in developing a sustainable multimodal transport and logistics corridor between Sines and Madrid and its hinterland.
The research fellow should apply AI and data science methods in the analysis/evaluation/modelling of processes, traffic flows, scenarios and KPIs in the corridor using data provided by APS.
Scientific Supervision
The research fellow's activities will be supervised by the project coordinator at LNEC, Eng. Elisabete M. Mourinho Arsénio Guterres de Almeida (Elisabete Arsénio), Principal Researcher at LNEC's Transport Department, and by Prof. Rui Henriques, associated researcher of INESC-ID/IST. At MARLO, the supervision is conducted by Eng. Nuno Bento.

- Document stating the score obtained in each curricular unit of the course the applicant is attending, if applicable.
Certificates issued outside Portugal shall be valid only if they are duly endorsed by an issuing entity or if a recognition/equivalence document is produced stating that the foreign qualifications correspond to the same Portuguese qualifications. The respective scores can only be used if they are officially converted to the Portuguese scoring scale (by DGES – Direção Geral do Ensino Superior or by a public higher education institution), even if the foreign classification corresponds to a 1 to 20 scale.
